STATEMENT STONE featuring Granite Mafia

Why it’s trending: While the pre-pandemic white-on-beige aesthetic isn’t completely out, we’re starting to see glimmers of boldness alongside calm and neutral aesthetics, particularly on solid surfaces.

Ashland Builders works with Granite Mafia in Central Point to install stone, and we spoke with showroom consultant Becky Blagdon about the uptick in stone with veiny, graphic flair.

Blagdon defines statement stone as “something that says ‘wow’ when you walk in.”

“A lot of people will make the kitchen island their statement piece, especially when there’s a lot of veining.”

Statement stone is ideal for kitchen islands with a ‘waterfall edge’, covering the top and single side.

“You can line up [the pattern] and make it look really cool,” Blagdon says.

Why it’s tasteful: we get it—bolder stone can feel risky, but neutral-colored variegation paired with a simplified backdrop is likely to stay appealing far longer than the cringy cookie dough granite of the early 2000s.

Blagdon suggests pairing these bold moves with simpler, more understated elements like a single-color perimeter countertop and minimalist cabinets. “You need to make sure everything else is downplayed so your eye isn’t confused where to look,” she notes.

When it comes to choosing a solid surface for your home, Blagdon recommends researching the stone’s qualities and upkeep to ensure a surface matches your lifestyle. “They all have their pluses and minuses,” she says.
